A colourful display of our Values throughout our school......
Welcome to our latest newsletter for term 3.
Have you noticed that we have had some colour added to our grounds and gym, with the addition of some of our school and department values signage? Lovely visual prompts around our school to remind all of our school community about our commitment to display these values in our school setting. We are really grateful that we received a grant which assisted in funding the new signage.
Teacher Moderation
Last week our staff were involved in ‘moderation’ with Springfield Gardens and Moonah Primary School. This is a meeting where teachers get together to discuss student learning tasks against the Australian Curriculum, ensuring when it comes to assessing and reporting that there is consistency across our schools.
Communicating Learning
Teachers have been busy preparing another set of Evidences of Learning to share with families at our upcoming learning conversations from the 16th until the 19th of September. Teachers will be sharing a writing and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) Evidence of Learning with families. Some classes will also receive an additional evidence from our Japanese or PE teachers. Please take the time to book in for a conversation to celebrate the wonderful achievements your child has made over the term! More information will be sent out in the coming week.
School Satisfaction survey
Every year we put out a short survey for families to complete which gives us some important information about what we do well and where we can improve. Families have been sent the information home separately to complete, otherwise we will have many opportunities over the coming weeks for you to complete the survey. We have a goal to get more than 20 families to complete the survey – last year we had less than 5 families.
Whole School lunch and LiFT event
We are delighted to share that we will be having our Whole School Lunch on Wednesday the 25th of September – which is the last Wednesday of the term. Following our lunch, we will be opening up classrooms for some fun LIFT activities for families and children to participate in. Please keep an eye out for more details to come.
Enjoy this week’s newsletter sharing some wonderful learning from our specialist curriculum areas – Japanese, Health and PE, Kitchen/Garden and Launching into Learning.

Everybody from Kindergarten to Grade 6 has been learning different dance versions of the Hungry Giant and Soran Bushi (a Japanese fishing dance).
We joined together in daily PE to share what we had learned. The performance part of our dance was important and it was great to see it enjoyed by such a large number at our school. We really appreciated that once we had learned the parts it was enjoyable and social. It was enthusiastically completed and was great to share the cultural Japanese dance with our Japanese teacher Mrs Stephens.

News from Pre-Kinder & Launching into Learning
Preparing Preschool aged children for school.
It’s never too early to get your child comfortable with their local school. They can spend time at their local primary school from the day they are born. Free, weekly Launching into Learning (LIL) sessions cater for children aged 0-5. These play sessions happen at all Tasmanian Government primary schools. At Goodwood Primary these sessions take place on a Monday. A morning session from 9 am to 10.30am. This session is about developing connections and relationships with staff, families and our little learners. We play, sing, dance and read every session. Sessions take place in our Kinder room and are a great opportunity to become familiar with the environment and some of the staff they will be playing and learning with in Kinder in the future. We also have a pre-kinder that runs from 1.30 - 2.45 pm on Mondays. These sessions are for four-year-olds and they focus on interaction skills through games, songs and reading activities. Next term our Kindergarten teacher Miss Lilley will also be attending some LiL and Pre-Kinder sessions which is a great opportunity for next years Kinder students to meet her and begin to develop a relationship. Being familiar with the space and people they will encounter will help their transition to school.
If you are unable to attend many of our sessions because of work or other commitments, go for walks past our school and talk to your child about their exciting year ahead. Reach out to the office to get your enrolment pack or organise a more convenient time to meet with Mrs McShane or one of our other LiL or Kinder staff members.
Give your child plenty of time to ask questions or share any worries they might have.
We would love to play and learn with you at LiL or Pre-Kinder soon!

News from the Kitchen/ Garden Program
With Spring just around the corner we have been very busy in the garden this term.
We have been cleaning up and prepping beds for our Spring planting, pruning, and building up our compost.
This term we will also start our preparations for our annual plant sale which we will hold in term 4. This year the students will be taking on more responsibility and will be propagating and growing a majority of the plants.
If you have any pots you could donate for this, approximately the size of a cup or smaller, please hand them in to the front office we would be very grateful!

Grade 4/5 have been focusing on spoken Japanese in their "shopping unit". We set up a fruit and vegetable shop and a very popular fast-food restaurant where students were able to practice the dialogue while acting out the exchange. Students worked in pairs practicing the dialogue, substituting the food vocabulary and prices to suit themselves. Pairs then volunteered to perform their dialogue in front of the class, taking in turns being shop keeper and customer. Everyone was keen to have a go. We learnt that upon entering a Japanese establishment the shop keeper will loudly greet you with "Irashaimase!" (Welcome!).

We are rapidly getting closer to the end of 2024 and the final year of primary school for our grade 6 students. As part of their preparation for high school our grade 6’s have been participating in some transition visits to their chosen high schools.
These photos were taken on one of our visits to Cosgrove High School with Taz and Sam trying their hand at cooking some choc chip cookies.
Levies 2024
A reminder that school levies are now overdue and payable at the school office. Flexible payment arrangements for families may be organised with the School Business Manager if required.
Levies can be paid using the following options:
- At the school (by EFTPOS, cash or cheque)
- At Service Tasmania (by EFTPOS, cash or cheque)
- Through BPAY (using the Biller Code and Reference on your invoice)
- By mail, forward your cheque, money order or credit card details to the school, with the payment slip from your invoice attached (payable to the Department for Education, Children & Young People).
- Using Centrepay, a service provided by Centrelink.
Families who are supported through the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) do not need to pay levies. Applications for the Student Assistance Scheme may be made online, or paper forms can be provided at the school office.
Late arrivals
If your child arrives at school after 8:50am unaccompanied by a parent/guardian, the office will be marking attendance as unexplained other. The procedure for late arrivals will be as is for unexplained absences in that office staff will be calling the parent/guardian to clarify the reason the student was late arriving to school.
A reminder that if your child is absent from school for any reason that you notify the school office by 9:30 am of that day. You can either contact the school office on 6272 9100 or email goodwood.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Did you know if your child has 10 days off school per year, that by Grade 4 they are 1 year behind?
The best thing for your child's future is to come to school every day.
Student Medication
Please advise office staff and your child’s class teacher if your child needs to take medication during school hours so arrangements can be made for the medication to be administered.
It is a Department of Education requirement that the following forms must be completed and signed before the commencement of dispensing medication to students: ‘Administration of Routine Medication Authorisation Form for Parent/ Guardian’; and ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation Form for Doctors’. The administration of medication to students is undertaken by Admin staff who will ensure it is taken correctly, details (e.g. date, time, dose etc) entered on the student’s personal medication sheet, and signed by a staff member and witness.
Medication is kept locked in the school safe or safe room. Students should not have any types of medication in their school bags.
At our Meet and Greet Assemblies we celebrate the students who have been caught following our Goodwood Primary School Values. If an adult or student observes someone doing something that is Safe, Caring or shows that they are Learning they fill out a Positive Detective slip. The student is shown the slip as immediate feedback and positive reinforcement. The slip is then placed into a big bucket and we draw names out of the bucket like a raffle and then whoever gets drawn out wins a small prize.
