Welcome to our latest newsletter for Term 3, where we've enjoyed a fortnight of wonderful celebrations.
Last week, we joined schools across Australia in celebrating National Science Week! Our activities spanned from our youngest learners in Launching into Learning and Pre-Kinder to our Year 6 students. We welcomed special guests in our younger classes, including University of Tasmania students who shared their expertise in various scientific fields; we learned about the human heart from a Medical Student, making rainbows with an Astrophysicist, and delved into bugs and insects with an Entomologist! Our older students had the opportunity to attend the Festival of Bright Ideas, engaging with interactive displays related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. You might have even heard from our Kindergarten students about a volcano that erupted right in our sandpit!
This week's focus has been on celebrating books and reading. Activities included whole school reading, peer reading, guest readers in classrooms, and our eagerly awaited Book Week Parade. We also took the time to recognize our learners who met their reading goals in the Premier's Reading Challenge, underscoring a fantastic week that highlighted the importance of reading and books.
We also celebrated the achievements of students Rahni, Riley, Taz, and Kayden, who were selected to participate in the Southern Primary School Sports Association's annual Winter Sports Carnival on Tuesday.
We are immensely proud of all our learners for their courage and for seizing every opportunity presented to them.

In Grade 4/5, we have been examining data sets and crafting visual representations through bar graphs. We have discussed the significance of displaying data and how it simplifies the analysis of information. Using various colors to represent different elements enabled students to quickly recognise the highest and lowest values in the data at a glance.

In 5/6 we have been learning about different language features, one in particular being figurative language. We have been learning what figurative language is and how to use it in our writing. We looked at similes - which are a comparison between two things. We wrote poems about ourselves using similes comparing us to different characteristics. Here are some excellent examples of great similes.

Science Week at Goodwood Primary School
Students in Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 had a visit from 3 Young Tassie Scientists who are passionate about the field of science they are studying. We had a mini lesson about rainbows from a scientist studying astronomony. Another scientist was able to help us tell the difference between a bug and a beetle. The third scientist had us thinking about human biology and our organs. Did you know a child's heart beat is about 70 to 100 beats per minute.
More Science - This week is National Science Week. The theme is Species Survival - More than just Sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world. Students in 1/2 created mini ecosystems in a jar. Linked to reading and identifying features of non fiction texts and writing of procedures. Students were able to draw diagrams and label their experiment. Students are looking forward to making observations.

Levies 2024
A reminder that school levies are now overdue and payable at the school office. Flexible payment arrangements for families may be organised with the School Business Manager if required.
Levies can be paid using the following options:
- At the school (by EFTPOS, cash or cheque)
- At Service Tasmania (by EFTPOS, cash or cheque)
- Through BPAY (using the Biller Code and Reference on your invoice)
- By mail, forward your cheque, money order or credit card details to the school, with the payment slip from your invoice attached (payable to the Department for Education, Children & Young People).

Families who are supported through the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) do not need to pay levies. Applications for the Student Assistance Scheme may be made online, or paper forms can be provided at the school office.
Late arrivals
If your child arrives at school after 8:50am unaccompanied by a parent/guardian, the office will be marking attendance as unexplained other. The procedure for late arrivals will be as is for unexplained absences in that office staff will be calling the parent/guardian to clarify the reason the student was late arriving to school.
A reminder that if your child is absent from school for any reason that you notify the school office by 9:30 am of that day. You can either contact the school office on 6272 9100 or email goodwood.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Did you know if your child has 10 days off school per year, that by Grade 4 they are 1 year behind?
The best thing for your child's future is to come to school every day.
Student Medication
Please advise office staff and your child’s class teacher if your child needs to take medication during school hours so arrangements can be made for the medication to be administered.
It is a Department of Education requirement that the following forms must be completed and signed before the commencement of dispensing medication to students: ‘Administration of Routine Medication Authorisation Form for Parent/ Guardian’; and ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation Form for Doctors’. The administration of medication to students is undertaken by Admin staff who will ensure it is taken correctly, details (e.g. date, time, dose etc) entered on the student’s personal medication sheet, and signed by a staff member and witness.
Medication is kept locked in the school safe or safe room. Students should not have any types of medication in their school bags.

At our Meet and Greet Assemblies we celebrate the students who have been caught following our Goodwood Primary School Values. If an adult or student observes someone doing something that is Safe, Caring or shows that they are Learning they fill out a Positive Detective slip. The student is shown the slip as immediate feedback and positive reinforcement. The slip is then placed into a big bucket and we draw names out of the bucket like a raffle and then whoever gets drawn out wins a small prize.
